Who this is
shmigelsky.me is the personal scrapbook of Jeffrey Shmigelsky, run from Vancouver, British Columbia. I decide what happens to the information described here. You can reach me at geoff@shmigelsky.com.
What is recorded
There are no accounts, no sign-ups and no forms on this site, so I never ask for your name or email. What is recorded is how the site is used:
- Visits: pages viewed, how far you scroll, links clicked, and which photos you open or zoom into.
- Where you came from: the referring site, search or ad, and an advertising click identifier if you arrived from an ad.
- Your device: browser and device type, screen size, and approximate location (city or region) worked out from your IP address.
- Session recordings: a replay of mouse movement, scrolling and clicks, used to see how people actually use the site. It shows the page, not anything else on your screen.
Why
- To see which pages and photos people look at, and improve the site accordingly.
- To measure any advertising that promotes the site, and spend accordingly.
- To keep the site working, fast and free of abuse.
I do not sell this information, rent it, or share it for anyone else's marketing.
Who else handles it
These services process the information on my behalf, each under its own privacy terms. Their servers are generally in the United States, so information about your visit may be stored or processed outside Canada.
- Vercel — hosts the site, and runs Vercel Web Analytics to count visits.
- Google — Google Analytics to measure traffic, and Google Ads to measure and show advertising.
- PostHog — product analytics, click heatmaps and session recordings.
Cookies and advertising
Google Analytics and PostHog set cookies, or use your browser's local storage, to tell one visit from the next. If this site is advertised through Google Ads, Google may use cookies to measure which ads bring visitors, and to show you ads for this site on other websites based on your visit here.
You can opt out at any time, and the site works normally either way:
- Block or clear cookies, or turn on tracking protection, in your browser.
- Turn off personalised ads from Google at My Ad Center.
- Stop Google Analytics on every site with Google's opt-out browser add-on.
How long it is kept
Google Analytics keeps event data for fourteen months. Vercel, PostHog and Google Ads keep data on their own schedules, which are set out in their privacy terms.
Your choices
Ask me for a copy of what is held about your visits, or ask me to delete it, by emailing geoff@shmigelsky.com. There is no charge. Because nothing here identifies you by name, I may need a date and rough time of your visit to find it.
This site follows Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act and British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act. If you think your information has been handled badly, tell me first — and you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13, and I don't knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
